50 cent, Curtis James Jackson III (born July 6, 1975 in Queens, New York), is an American gangsta rapper and actor. After being discovered by Jam Master Jay, he was shot several times and fired from his record label. He has sold several million records. His life was filmed in Get Rich or Die Tryin'.
Curtis Jackson grew up in the South Jamaica neighbourhood of New York's Queens district in poor conditions. He did not know his father and his mother was murdered in her home when he was eight years old. Unknown people had invaded her house, turned on the gas while she was sleeping. After her death, Jackson lived with his grandparents. Since he had already had connections to the drug business through his mother, he acted as a 12-year-old with drugs and served several short prison sentences. He got the first big punishment at the age of 18.
He was discovered by the now murdered Jam Master Jay (Run-DMC), who signed him for his label. After the recording contract with Jam Master had proved unproductive, he moved to Columbia Records. There he made his debut album Power of the Dollar. Before it could be released, strangers stabbed Jackson in front of a recording studio. In a shootout on May 24, 2000 in front of his grandparents' house, nine bullets hit him in the face, arms and legs; however, he was released from the hospital after only 13 days. His record company dissolved the contract to avoid more negative press, and postponed the release of the album indefinitely. Some of the pieces intended for this album are on the 2002 release Guess Who's Back?
Upon his return to the drug milieu, Jackson was discovered for the second time. Eminem signed him in 2002 with his label Shady Records (and also at Aftermath Entertainment).
In May 2005, Jackson was sentenced to two years of probation with regular drug testing and anti-aggression training for injuring three women and causing a brawl at a spring 2004 show in Springfield. He admitted the assault and accepted the conditions to avoid imminent imprisonment.
In June 2012, Jackson was involved in a car accident and as a result had to go to hospital for a short time. A truck had hit him on the highway.
Jackson was convicted of personal bankruptcy on July 13, 2015, on charges of $5 million for publishing a private sex video by Lastonia Leviston just a week earlier. An important reason for this step is that the protection of creditors usually interrupts legal proceedings and suspends compensation payments, is critically noted by the press.
Under the label G Unit, Jackson markets a clothing line, mobile ringtones, computer games and dime novels. In return for an advertising contract with the New York-based beverage company Glacéau, which brought him for its vitamin water division the drink "Formula 50" on the market, he took over a 10% stake in Glaceau. In May 2007, Glaceau Inc. was acquired by Coca-Cola Corporation for $4.1 billion, earning the rapper a profit of several hundred million dollars. Previously it was estimated his fortune at 100 million US dollars; according to Forbes Magazine he earned $32 million in 2006 alone, (2005: $ 19.7 million).
